BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity with a history that stretches back over 100 years. Each year, they get millions of children reading. Outthought were first commissioned to design a digital presentation for teachers about the benefits of BookTrust’s Letter Box Club scheme, which delivers books to children monthly as part of the Pupil Premium. The success of this project led to Outthought designing the annual, illustrated ‘Great Books Guide’ for 2025-26.

Adventure, fun, mystery and tall tales for all ages
The Great Books guide is an annual list of 100 selected reading recommendations for children aged 4 to 11. The guide is an eclectic directory, covering everything from fiction to fact books, that aims to encourage reading for pleasure.
Outthought redesigned the guide to foreground key information about each entry and make reviews easily digestible to young readers. The introduction of colour-coded page-edge indexes clarifies age categories and provides tick boxes to allow junior bookworms to compile their personal wish lists!

Pointing the way to the joy of reading
For Book Trust’s Letter Box Club presentation, Outthought put a focus on the impact of this great scheme that many schools and teachers simply weren’t aware of.
By expanding on the Trust’s illustrative and playful style and making effective use of a set of illustrated directional arrows, the digital presentation clarifies the offer in an easily digestible form. Embedded video adds additional clarity and walks decision-makers through the many benefits of the Letter Box Club scheme.
